What is Mounjaro?

Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a weekly self-injectable pen used for weight loss treatment. It is used alongside a low-calorie diet and increased exercise to aid weight loss.

What’s the difference between Mounjaro and Zepbound?
Both are identical medications with the same active ingredient, tirzepatide, and function similarly. The difference lies in their names: Zepbound is the US name for the weight loss medication, whereas in the UK, it’s known as Mounjaro. Zepbound is not licensed in the UK.

How does Mounjaro work?
The active ingredient, tirzepatide, targets two hormonal receptors: GLP-1 and GIP. GLP-1 helps control blood sugar levels, reduces hunger, and slows stomach emptying. GIP enhances the effects of GLP-1, further suppressing appetite and improving sugar control. By mimicking these hormones, Mounjaro has greater weight loss potential compared to medicines working on GLP-1 alone. This is seen in clinical trials in which patients who had taken Mounjaro for 72 weeks lost 20.9% of mean body weight whereas those on semaglutide only had lost 15%.

How to use
Mounjaro is injected subcutaneously once a week in the stomach, thigh, or upper arm.

Dosage
The dosage starts with a 2.5 mg dose once a week for 4 weeks, gradually increasing every four weeks as advised, until reaching the maintenance dose of 5mg, 10mg, or 15mg.

Other important information
If you’re considering purchasing Mounjaro online, it’s important to note that it’s approved for individuals with a BMI over 30, or over 27 with weight-related health issues. However, it’s advisable to avoid its use if you’re pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or if you have certain medical conditions like severe digestive issues, or a history of pancreatitis or thyroid cancer.

Alternative weight loss treatments
An alternative injection we offer is Wegovy, which is a sister drug to Ozempic, and works in the same way as Ozempic. They are both semaglutides.

Non-drug alternatives
Healthy lifestyle changes, such as improved diet and increased activity, are essential for weight loss.

Effectiveness timeline
It starts working immediately, with noticeable effects on blood sugar and appetite over several weeks.

Switching from Wegovy to Mounjaro
If you decide to switch from Wegovy to Mounjaro, a 1-month washout period is required before switching, starting with a 2.5mg dose of Mounjaro.

Choosing between Wegovy and Mounjaro
Both are extremely effective, but Mounjaro has shown slightly greater weight loss potential. The choice depends on individual needs and consultation results.

Yes, Mounjaro was approved for weight loss in the UK by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) in November 2023.
While both Mounjaro and Ozempic are effective for weight loss management, Mounjaro might offer slightly more weight loss benefits due to its dual incretin action. However, individual responses can vary, and the choice between these medications should be made by advice from the doctor and your final decision.
The duration of Mounjaro treatment for weight loss varies by individual and should be determined by ongoing medical evaluation by your doctor and the patient’s response to the medication. Long-term use is feasible and often necessary for maintaining weight loss.
Weight regain is a common concern after stopping weight loss medications like Mounjaro. While the risk of regaining weight exists, it can be mitigated through sustained lifestyle changes, behavioral support, and medical monitoring. It is essential to approach weight management as a long-term commitment to healthy living rather than relying solely on medication.

Try to avoid eating high-sugar foods, high-fat, fried or processed foods, refined carbohydrates, large meals, alcohol and specific ‘trigger foods’ which may exarcebate side effects of Mounjaro. Try to drink a lot of water, have a balanced diet including a lot of fruit and vegetables, lean proteins and whole grains.

Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, fatigue, lightheadedness, excess gas, gallstones, acid reflux, injection site reactions and hypoglycemia in type 2 diabetes patients. Serious side effects, though rare, can include pancreatitis and anaphylaxis. Read the Patient Information Leaflet for full details.

Managing side effects
Side effects are typically mild and decrease over time. Tips include maintaining a regular injection schedule, staying hydrated, eating smaller meals, increasing fibre intake, and using relaxation techniques for headaches. If you feel nauseous while on Mounjaro, it’s advisable to steer clear of strongly flavored or aromatic foods. Opt for bland options such as rice and bread instead. Additionally, it’s recommended to avoid consuming fats and greasy foods while taking Mounjaro.
